Post-processing of the sidescan sonar data will allow plans of the areas of exposed peat to be input into the GIS database. The sidescan images will also be mosaiced to form a continuous image of the seabed surface. Palaeoenvironmental Sampling In the first year of field work the mapping and sampling of inter-tidal peats will be carried out during the lowest tides and will use existing data as a starting point to confirm areas of peat and to establish their hieght above ordanance datum. An initial assessment of the quality and quantity of material available at the potential inter-tidal sampling locations will be made. The initial results of offshore survey will be used to identify a test site for offshore peat sampling. Various techniques for land and sea-based sampling will be tested.

Abstract. This article reviews optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating as used on Quaternary sediments and for archaeological dating. The underlying physics is summarized and the laboratory method itself is described.

The Russians successfully used them to combat infection even as far back as WW2.
I guess pharmaceutical companies want to squeeze as much as they can out of increasingly expensive antibiotics while they can, then at some critical juncture they might finally adopt it in earnest.
Australia human history ‘rewritten by rock find’
Andy Henion Media Communications office: Fast forward 16, years, and a team of MSU researchers and archaeology students has confirmed the existence of an undisturbed, prehistoric sand dune beneath a grove of pine trees between Demonstration Hall and Munn Ice Arena. Campus Archaeology, run by the Department of Anthropology and made up mostly of undergraduate and graduate students, is committed to identifying historic and prehistoric sites across the sprawling 5, acre campus.
The dig team discovered a host of artifacts, including iron woodstoves, glass medicine bottles and a toothbrush made of bone. The sloping land on which the sand dune rests was purchased by then-Michigan Agricultural College in At that time the dune was exposed and eroding on the developing campus, so the following year forestry professor Frank Sanford planted a variety of pine and spruce, which would successfully stop the erosion.
Luminescence Dating The Luminescence Dating Laboratory at the Research Laboratory for Archaeology and the History of Art, University of Oxford, has been actively involved in the development and application of luminescence dating for more than 50 years. The Laboratory has considerable experience in the dating of sediments and pottery and offers a service for luminescence dating of archaeological, environmental and Quaternary geological contexts.
This includes optically stimulated luminescence OSL dating of sediments as well ceramics pottery, brick, tile, etc… , and burnt stones. Applications of Luminescence Dating Luminescence dating is particularly appropriate when radiocarbon dating is not possible either where no suitable material is available or for ages beyond the radiocarbon age limit or for applications affected by radiocarbon plateau effects e.
The particular advantage of luminescence dating is that the method provides a date for the archaeological artefact or deposit itself, rather than for organic material in assumed association. In the case of OSL sediment dating, suitable material sand or silt-sized grains of quartz and feldspar is usually available ubiquitously throughout the site. Age range and precision The age range for pottery and other ceramics covers the entire period in which these materials have been produced.

Dating the beginning of the age of the pyramids using OSL dating and the minimum extraction sampling technique. Yet while widely applied throughout many regions, in Egypt the development of OSL coincided with the introduction of a law that enacted a ban on the export of antiquities. This ban included a clause which continues to prevent the removal of archaeological samples for scientific analysis.
Thus, the study of Egyptian archaeology has not benefitted from this important chronometric tool. Nowhere is this more evident than in the study of ceramics, which continue to be dated using relative dating techniques only. Specifically, a new sampling protocol, the minimum extraction technique MET , has been developed in order to conduct OSL dating on ceramic material housed in museum collections.
As the name implies, MET removes only a tiny sample for analysis from the ceramic, thus ensuring that the aesthetic integrity of the museum object is upheld at all times, with minimal damage being inflicted on the vessel. This paper will discuss MET and its development, and will also present OSL results obtained from Egyptian ceramic material using this sampling protocol.
This project focused specifically on dating the end of the Early Dynastic period as it transitions into the Old Kingdom:
Extensively excavated over the past 50 years, numerous dating studies have been focused on the Upper Paleolithic deposits using radiocarbon on bone collagen and thermoluminescence TL on heated flints; however, the Mousterian levels remain undated due to the scarcity of suitable materials. Our investigations aimed to provide for the first time a chronological framework for the site using luminescence dating methods on different minerals contained in the sediments.
The agreement between these methods provides key insights into the sedimentological processes involved in the site formation and into the chronology of the human occupations.

Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating is widely applied to sediments in paleoenvironmental sciences. However, there are only limited examples determining the age of archaeological stone structures by OSL using dust deposits.
It is thus my great pleasure to write an introduction to the Virtual Special Issue on Women in Physics , assembling contributions to science made by outstanding women scientists. The issue represents a broad selection of works ranging from mathematics and physics to computer science, helping us understand our environment, develop and protect it, as well as look beyond it. To illustrate this, I describe but a few of excellent results contained in this issue.
This paper builds on a statistical mechanics approach to earthquake occurrence and develops it to improve seismic forecasting. Practical solar energy has long been a holy grail of renewable energy technology but substantial improvements are still required to reduce its cost. Shields looks beyond our immediate environment by streaming the light of factual discovery and analysis on what was once the realm of science fiction, and thus advancing our understanding of whether life can exist on other planets.
Looking at the importance and societal impact of these investigations it is hard to believe that even just a hundred years ago mankind was depriving itself of the insight, creativity, and curiosity of half of its numbers by denying women scientific careers. The tremendous scientific progress of the last century is certainly due in a large part to the fact that – at least in the developed world – this potential is being unleashed. Of this, this Special Issue on Women in Physics is a small but potent illustration.
